Did you know that touch can actually heal you? It's true.
Perhaps you've noticed that if you have a headache or a pain somewhere in your body, you're likely to touch it at some point. If you see a friend or family member looking a little down, you might put a hand on his or her back or shoulder and ask "Are you okay?" And a hug lasting twenty seconds or more releases the neurotransmitter and bonding hormone called oxytocin, known as a natural antidepressant which also keeps anxiety at bay.
In a 2015 Time magazine article, Eric Barker writes:
Touching is incredibly powerful. We just don't give it enough credit. It makes you more persuasive, increases team performance . . . it even boosts math skills. Touching someone you love actually reduces pain.
What can we learn from all of this? The time has arrived for you to make it more of a priority to work more touching into your life!
Now, of course, you want to take appropriateness into consideration. We can't just go around touching people arbitrarily. But there are many ways for you to accomplish giving and receiving more touch while satisfying society's rules. For example, if you have a difficult day at work, you can hug your loved ones when you get home. And non-human loved ones definitely count.
If you enjoy massages, make it more of a priority to get them regularly. Massage is not just a luxury. It moves the fluid through your lymph system, encouraging detoxification. It eases soreness and stiffness and increases agility. It also uplifts your mood, thereby making anything else you experience that day more pleasant.
You can also use acupressure or go to see a practitioner. Acupressure is based on the Eastern belief that we have meridians in our bodies that transport our Qi or life energy. When a meridian becomes blocked, the energy doesn't flow, and there's a negative manifestation. It can be anywhere, relationships, health, mood, weight, sleep. But by pressing on certain endpoints along the meridians, we can release the blockages, get the good energy flowing again, and, often, release the negative manifestation.
So, do what you can to get more touch into your life. It feels good, it uplifts your mood, and it improves your life!
