It's almost that time again, back to school. Summer really does go by too fast! Every August, it's time to stock up on school supplies and all the other goodies needed for learning.
With the start of school comes other challenges too, including germs. According to the CDC, 40% of children aged 5-17 years old missed 3 or more school days due to illness.
Nearly 22 million school days are lost yearly due to colds alone and 38 million due to flu.
So while getting pencils, notebooks, and lunch boxes don't forget these top essential oils for helping your child get through those tough school days.
Protective Blend: this is one of my favorite essential oils to use on my kids. It's great for supporting healthy immune function, protecting against environmental threats, and has an energizing and uplifting aroma. Generally I like to apply 1 - 2 drops to the bottom of their feet daily. You can also diffuse it before and after school to help the whole family.
Focus Blend: My older son really likes this one. It enhances and sustains focus, supports efforts of those who have difficulty paying attention and staying on task and promotes healthy thought processes. Perfect for studying for those big tests! Apply the Focus Blend on the back of neck and on bottoms of feet.
Grounding Blend: awwww, the grounding blend makes me so happy. I use this one daily on myself too, I love it! The grounding blend creates a sense of calm and well-being, promotes whole-body relaxation, helps you feel more balanced, lessens stress, and helps with anxious feelings and nerves. Apply this one to the bottoms of feet or on your wrists as a perfume or cologne.
Lavender: this one is always a good one to have as it's widely used for it's calming and relaxing qualities. Lavender also soothes occasional skin irritations and eases muscle tension. You can apply lavender topically to reflex points or directly on area of concern. It's also great for diffusing or adding a few drops to your bathwater.
Wild Orange: an all around favorite to many. It protects against seasonal and environmental threats, is high in antioxidants, and is uplifting to the mind and body. This is a good one to diffuse around the house while the kids are doing homework (it smells great too). You can also apply it topically however be aware that it's a photosensitive essential oil, meaning that you need to avoid direct sunlight for up to 12 hours after application.
Peppermint: another favorite in my home as it promotes healthy respiratory function and clear breathing, alleviates occasional stomach upset, and can be used in toothpaste for oral health. Peppermint can be applied topically or dilute equal parts essential oil with a carrier oil for kids or anyone with sensitive skin. Apply it directly to area of concern and/or reflex points.
Some ideas to get you started are:
Morning: to help wake up your kids try using peppermint or wild orange.
After School: help them get over the after school slump with peppermint, wild orange, or the focus blend.
Before bed: help your kids relax and get ready for bed with lavender or the grounding blend.
The quality of the oil makes a difference too. Always take care to invest in top quality therapeutic grade essential oils. The ones I use are and, naturally, the ones I recommend. Knowing that they're safe and will do the job I'm using them for gives me peace of mind when using on my children.
